ODEKPE, St Vincent de Paul Parish
PASTORAL VISIT / CONFIRMATION/ COMMUNITY MEETING
Sunday, 27 March 2022
Picture
I got up quite early, at about 3.30pm, to pack my bag for the trek. We had no community prayers and Mass. Breakfast at 6.45am. Among the items I took along with me: a bag containing over one hundred pieces of Rosary, bottle of water, spare singlet, life saver jackets, etc. We set out at 7.00am with my strong car - Nissan Pathfinder. With me were: Fr Mike Odenigbo, two minor seminarians, a monastic nun and my driver, Ketu.
We first travelled through Onitsha and Asaba to Illah (Delta State). We left our car at the bank of River Niger and boarded a speed boat provided by Fr Crescent Eze, my principal host, to Igbedor. From Igbedor, the Sisters of the Emmanuel Institute made available their truly rugged Land Rover to convey us to Odekpe. It was a dangerous road but we made it to our destination. Seeing that the whole town was waiting for my arrival, I got down from the car at the entrance of the village and walked through the town with the people to the Church.
On arrival, first, I sat down with the parish priest, Fr Crescent Ezeh to inspect parish records and to converse with him to ascertain his welfare. Then we celebrated Holy Mass (with the penitential rite of blessing and sprinkling of the Holy Water), during which about thirty candidates received the Sacrament of Confirmation. After Mass, we were offered lunch by the parish. Every person present was recognised and offered lunch.
I had a special meeting with the Elite of the Community. Then, I had a long anticipated meeting with the Elders of the Community. Young people later joined the group. It was a town hall meeting. I met separately the women leaders of the town. My mission in all my meetings was to promote peace and harmony in the society that had known violent clashes in the recent past. Our stay together was a huge success.
By 3.30pm I bid the people farewell and set out for my return journey. River Niger was not exactly calm as we sped back to Illah bank. Smooth arrival in Aguleri after 7.00pm. Grazie Signore, rendiamo grazie a Te che regni nei secoli eterni.
