THROUGH A CAMERA LENS
AGULERI, St Joseph's Catholic Cemetery:
MASS FOR THE SOULS OF THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED
Tuesday, 2 November 2021
Picture
Today, each Catholic Priest is allowed and even encouraged to celebrate three Mass. the specific intentions for which these three Masses are to be celebrated are described in the Papal Constitution of Pope Benedict XV, Incruentum Altaris sacrificium:  The first Mass can be applied for whomever the priest wishes, the second is to be applied for all the faithful departed, and the third for the intention of the Pope.
I celebrated the first Mass at 6.45am, the second at 12.00 noon both in our chapel. During the second Mass, I brought to the chapel and introduced my new driver, Ketuojo Marcellinus Omojo. He will be known and addressed as Ketu. I admonished him to honest, faithful and holy. I mandated Fr Mike Odenigbo to go and bless his room.
The third Mass was at 5.00pm the St Joseph's Parish cemetery in Aguleri. This cemetery has the graves of most of the early missionaries (their bones later transferred to Onitsha, and three of them still there), Onyekomeli Idigo (the first prominent convert in Aguleri), and many lay faithful. Our third Mass at the cemetery was very well attended by the parishioners. For the first time, my new driver drove me to the arena for the Mass. He drove very well.
At the end of the Mass, we sang "Ka anyi kwe ka ndi otu Kristi..." Also I recall this ancient song, which is a prayer for the souls in Purgatory:
Help, Lord, the souls that you have made, / The souls to You so dear,
In prison for the debt unpaid / Of sin committed here.
